Three days ago, my feed showed me something I couldn’t ignore: a sweet, soulful stray dog following two kind travelers, silently pleading for a home. My heart sank—he was 300 kilometers away. So far. I hesitated, hoping someone closer would step in.
But yesterday, reality hit hard: the travelers had to leave town, and no shelter or pet shop would take him. “Too risky,” they said. “He might carry something.” My choice was clear—let him face the streets alone, or go get him. So, at 8 PM, I grabbed my keys, a blanket, and a bag of treats, and drove into the night.
Twelve hours later, I met them—two exhausted angels and one trembling pup—in a dimly lit parking lot. He was smaller than he looked online, all wary eyes and tucked tail. I called him softly. He shivered. When I lifted him into my car, he froze in the corner, ignoring the water and snacks I’d brought. So I stayed. We spent the night together in that quiet lot—me whispering promises, him watching, learning my scent.
By sunrise, magic happened. A tentative sniff. A nudge against my hand. Then, a wag—tiny, but real. He leaned into my touch, as if saying, “Okay. I choose you too.”Come with me, little one. Let’s get you a fresh haircut, a soothing bath, and then head home together.
Today, after another 300km drive (this time with a napping passenger!), he’s home. Still nervous, still learning. But when he rests his head on my knee? I know we’ll be alright.
